If you live in the UK, you may have heard Iceland supermarkets have started to sell speciality meats. Things like venison, buffalo, kangaroo and ostrich. Today I’ll be reviewing Iceland’s £1.30 ostrich fillet steaks – not a lot to pay in my opinion, so lets see what they’re like…
The ostrich steaks come pre-packed and frozen and are therefore not from a fresh butchers counter. What I love about ostrich steaks is they’re really lean and low in fat. These ones from Iceland come in at 0.7g of fat per 100g of which 0.3g are saturated – which is great!
I cooked these steaks with a tiny bit of oil in a non-stick frying pan. The steaks aren’t too thick which means once they’re defrosted they don’t take too long to cook. Whilst they’re easy to cook in a pan or under a grill, I imagine on the BBQ would definitely be the most satisfying way of cooking these fillets.
In terms of taste (bearing in mind they’re £1.30) the results aren’t bad! You can tell the meat is really lean and succulent and it’s not too tough either. Therefore it’s definitely good value for money.
