Today I’ll be reviewing the Viognier white wine from the St. Gabriel vineyard in France, for the Central England Co-Operative We Like Wine campaign. This is a 2013 wine that is 13.5% in strength, priced at £6.99 from the Co-Op.
This wine has a lovely fruity and tangy taste which makes it an easy wine to drink. It tastes really fresh and crisp and for that reason it tastes best when it’s thoroughly chilled. This would definitely go down well on a warm summers evening so it would be the perfect wine to have if you’re barbecuing outside for friends. What’s more, it’s not too expensive which makes it even better if you’re hosting for others.
The Viognier is quiet mild in flavour with obvious tropical notes coming from the dried stone fruits used in the wine. I could certainly taste the floral flavours, but not so much vanilla as suggested on the label.
In terms of food that would go well with this wine, fish is an immediately obvious choice. Pink fish less so but definitely white fish – I feel my Lemon Pepper Fish Recipe would be a perfect accompaniment. If you’re having cheese and wine, this is the best wine I’ve found so far to have with it.
To conclude, this is one of the best value for money bottles of white wine I’ve tried in a while. It’s a very easy drinker which is light and fruity in flavour. I’d certainly recommend buying a few bottles if you’re entertaining, or looking for an elegant white to give as a gift. It’ll go well with fresh, flavoursome dishes and I can imagine myself sipping this whilst having a picnic as the sun sets! I really hope you give this Viognier a try as it’s definitely a worth-while wine to try at a more than reasonable price.
