This month I’ll be reviewing Piper Heidsieck Brut Non-Vintage Champagne for the Central England Cooperative We Like Wine Blog. You can get this for £30.99 from the Co-op – so for this price I’d expect it to be a reasonably nice bottle of fizz!
To kick things off, this champagne is definitely darker in colour than other champagnes I’ve tried. On first sip it’s very tangy, but not in an eye-squinting way! It has just the right amount of citrusy flavours to deliver the tang just right. The champagne has a really smooth taste thanks to just the right amount of fizz.
In terms of what this would go well with, a seafood or pasta dish would suit it perfectly, so something like my Seafood Tagliatelle. If you’re not drinking it with a meal, with it being champagne, it would obviously be great to celebrate with too.
Considering all of this, I feel this bottle of champagne is good value for money and delivers great quality taste, especially for a non-vintage. So I would definitely suggest considering this against other vintage champagnes, especially if you’re watching the pennies.
Reading through my highlights, it’s easy to see why Piper Heidsieck was elected as sparkling winemaker of the year seven times at the International Wine Challenge in London.
It would be a waste to try this champagne if you haven’t let it chill thoroughly, so be sure to leave it in the fridge for a good while before opening, because without doubt, it’s a really cool temperate that helps deliver it’s crisp taste.
The champagne has a 12% volume and would make a perfect gift. I’m certainly considering keeping another bottle hidden away ready for a special occasion, but first and foremost, I’ll probably give this as a gift to myself again (maybe when the weather starts warming up)!
