Today I’ll be reviewing an Australian red wine from the Yalumba estate – one of Australia’s oldest Family owned winery’s - as part of the Central England Co-Operative’s We Like Wine Campaign. This Old Bush Vine Grenache is priced at £10.99 from my local Co-Op.
This is a 2008 bottled wine and is 14.5% in strength. What’s immediately obvious with this wine is its darkness and rich/deep scents it gives off when poured. It has definite plumb notes which I’m sure would compliment dishes like duck, or with pate.
It is, however, a reasonably heavy wine and for that reason I couldn’t drink too much – so it’s probably best shared with friends over cheese, crackers and canapés and enjoyed in moderation! I wasn’t sure if I could taste woody flavours but upon reading the label, the wine is aged in wooden barrels which definitely comes through when drinking.
This strong, spicy wine is certainly full of flavour and you get a lot of bang for your buck. But I would consider spending a few pounds more if you want something that’s a little easier on the pallet, especially if you’re looking for a red to enjoy with dinner because this would definitely be too heavy if drinking with steak or something similar.
For more foods to enjoy this with I’d probably suggest stir fries that are aromatic in flavour in order to compliment the earthy palate of the wine, as well as salads that have a little more substance to them – such as chicken caesar.
This wine has £1 off at the Co-Op until 24th February 2015, so now is the best time to give it a go if you want to experiment with a wine that has intense aromas of spiced berry fruits and intense spicy notes. It may be a bit like Marmite though, you may love it or hate it!
