So its been quiet a redundant appliance in our kitchen, so I decided to wipe off the cobwebs and give it a whirl…  and what a result!

I would probably stay clear of using “non-slow cooker”  recipes in one though.  On the first attempt, this is what I tried, but found the sauce was far too runny.  But on the most recent attempt, I found this great slow cooker recipe and changed it slightly as follows:

  • 1kg stewing meat
  • 4 carrots, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced and separated into rings
  • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 Beef Oxo Cubes

Fry the meat then lob everything in the slow cooker for 7-9 hours on low, you may have to put some corn flour in the mixture to thicken it slightly if runny at all.

Although it seems like a long time, I prepared everything before work (took 15 mins) and by the time I got home, dinner was ready – perfect stew!

Please comment if you have any great slow cooker recipes…

So the festive period is over, and, like many, you’re probably feeling a bit groggy from excesses of mulled wine and turkey!

We went to the supermarket and found the perfect starter kit to begin detoxing for the new year – all for a fiver…

For Smoothies:

  • Frozen summer fruits
  • Frozen chopped mango
  • Pineapple
  • Orange & Mango Juice

For Detox:

  • Pomegranate juice

So, all you have to do…  Pomegranate Juice is crammed with antioxidants so make sure you have a glass of this a day.

And for the rest, chop the pineapple and stick this in a bowl with the mango and summer fruits.  Mix the bowl and separate the contents into 5-6 sandwich bags.  Then, put the bags in the freezer.

Each morning, put the contents of 1 bag in a blender with some Orange & Mango juice.  Blend and enjoy for the next 5-6 days.  Having a smoothie in the morning is a great pick-me-up and you will feel the difference straight away.  A good tip is to blend whilst the fruit is still relatively frozen.

Well I hope you had a very Merry Christmas.

Thanks to precision planning, the Christmas dinner went down perfectly.  Luckily, if you had an EXTREAMLY merry Christmas, and been over the limit to drive a car over the festive season, you may have already offset the carbon emissions caused by the disposable roasting tins we suggested to use – everyone’s a winner!

And with all the leftovers, what better way to use them than in a Christmas Burger.  Check out our previous post to see what to use, and leave us a comment to let us know how it goes…

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hear are a few tips to help Christmas dinner go as smoothly as possible:

  • Plan it down to a tee – Clarify what your serving time is and write down (in order of time): what time each thing has to go in the oven.
  • Delegate – If you can get ONE person in charge of each food on your Christmas dinner plate, it will be a doddle.  This also encourages each person to take pride in their role to make their ‘potatoes (or whatever)’ to be the best food on the plate.  This also means your only in charge of one thing.
  • Go Disposable (sorry Greenpeace) – Its only for a day though!  Use disposable foil roasting tins, these are a God-send and significantly cut down on the washing up (quid’s in from the pound shop!)
