So I tweeted the other week about the mighty Banana Sandwich because quiet simply, they taste brilliant!
It’s just a shame that whenever I seem to mention them, I usually get the same response. Put politely, “that sounds disgusting”!
But, don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it – that’s what I say. So here are my top tips for making the perfect Banana Sandwich:
- Bread – you must use soft, WHITE bread for your Banana Sandwich
- Leave the crusts on
- Use margarine, not butter. Because you need an equal spread on each slice of bread to make a perfectly soft Banana Sandwich
- Slice the banana width ways at a thickness of 1cm – no more, no less!
Slice the Banana Sandwich in half and enjoy, and if you’re lucky, you may even have some banana left over for dessert!

If your cooking for mates, or simply looking for a recipe to jazz up chicken and make it taste great, then you should try my recipe for stuffed chicken breast wrapped in parma ham.
It’s easy to cook and the parma ham helps keep the chicken moist when in the oven. All you need to do is mix chives with cream cheese and stuff this into each chicken breast.
Then brush the chicken with oil, marjoram/oregano and garlic, then wrap with the parma ham. Sprinkle the chicken with mozzarella half way through cooking then it’s done – A real crowd pleaser!

So I’ve just come back from a great festival at Glasto. After getting there on Wed 22nd (at some ungodly hour in the morning) and leaving at another ungodly hour early on Mon 27th, it required a substantial amount of food to get us through. This time, I wasn’t overly prepared to pay the £7+ for greasy burgers in a bap, so in my quest to save money wherever possible, I took my own food. This could only mean one thing, cereal bars and dinners in a tin. So here’s my quick review: Tinned meatballs (around 45p) – Avoid if at all possible! Tinned Chicken Tikka Masalla (around 80p) – Where’s the chicken!? Tinned Beef Stew (around 80p) – Best out of a bad bunch! So after a long sleep on my return, I couldn’t wait to fry up some onions and garlic and cook up something from scratch, boy can you taste the difference! |

Lasagne is a great, wholesome dinner that 9/10 times leaves you feeling pretty satisfied afterwards. However, it can also be pretty unhealthy as a consequence.
Even if we were to switch to the extra lean variety of beef mince, this still has about 4.5g of fat per 100g, about half of which is likely to be saturated. So my suggestion: switch to turkey mince!
You’ll want to chose the Turkey breast mince as it is sometimes available in thigh mince version also (which is slightly higher in fat). The rules are then simple, just add the turkey when you would have added the beef and cook as normal, you’ll also be surprised at how turkey mince doesn’t dry out half as much.
So, if you’re looking for a lasagne recipe try our FitBrits Turkey and Spinach Lasagne recipe and if you feel like experimenting even further, why not try this Chilli con Carne recipe which also works great with ground turkey.

Sometimes I get ‘eating block’ when I’m struggling for inspiration at the supermarket. I want to try something new but there’s a debate going on between my stomach and my head!
Stomach says “Just buy it and feed me”, head says “Well hang on, how can I make this more interesting to eat?” So before you start going mad down a supermarket isle, it’s worth remembering that you can jazz most things up with pre-prepared breadcrumbs, yes, plain-old breadcrumbs! So you’ve bought a plain chicken breast, salmon fillet, piece of pork or a bag of white fish and you don’t know what to do next, well, you can bread them. Simply have 3 separate bowls with one of the following in each:
Dip your piece of meat/fish in the flour, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs and cook in the oven – simple! If that’s not enough, it tastes even better if you mix a little chilli powder (or other herb of your choice) in the breadcrumbs. FitBrits.com already has two great breaded recipes which are really quick and easy to make. So why not check out our recipe for Homemade Fish and Chips and our Chicken Nuggets Recipe and let us know how you get on through Facebook. |

Summer’s almost here and we can see you’re starting to check out our ‘Cooking on the BBQ’ guide. I also blew the cobwebs off the barbecue this weekend for the first time in 2011 to cook a full-English. If you thought you couldn’t beat a fry-up at the weekend, try it on the BBQ – you really can’t get better than that! Anyway, I thought I’d divulge my top 3 tips for cooking on the barbecue in order to impress your guests, starting with the most important:
I hope I’ve provided some inspiration to get out in the garden and start grilling. The British Summer is on it’s way, enjoy it while it lasts! Warren. |

I’m always on the lookout for a good deal and love being able to admit that I rarely pay full price for anything anymore! As food costs constitute a large part of my monthly outgoings, I’ve finally found a successful way to save between £25 and £40 on my food bill each time I visit the supermarket.
In the example in this blog post, I saved £35.17.
It’s easy to assume that supermarkets like Asda are the cheapest, after all, they do claim to be Britain’s lowest priced supermarket. However, prices here are usually only marginally undercut from their competitors and the “2 for £2” type offers tend to only save you a matter of pence. The quality of food is usually lower at these types of supermarket as well. After all (and it doesn’t matter what anyone else says in my opinion) – you ALWAYS get what you pay for!
So why do I think Sainsbury’s is the best for saving money? They do big deals, and lots of them. You may be thinking, “well last time I was in Sainsbury’s I didn’t come out with more cash in my pocket than expected”! To take advantage of the offers, you need to do your research. Invest a little time and it will pay off ten fold.
This is how to do it (from someone who does their food shop every three weeks).
- When planning your shopping list, log onto Sainsbury’s Groceries and click onto the “Deals & Offers” tab. Browse through all the sub categories and note down everything you want from the deals.
- Build the recipes you’ll cook for the next three weeks around what you’re buying from the deals – this also helps if you’re stuck for inspiration on what to cook.
- Get down to Sainsbury’s with your shopping list and take up all the offers – it’s amazing how visible you’ll find them after knowing their there!
A WORD OF WARNING FOR ONLINE DELIVERY!
It’ll obviously be easier to get your savings delivered to the door, but it’s rare that you’ll get them all in a delivery rather than picking the food yourself. The reason being – substitutions. You’ll find the best deals from Sainsbury’s tend to be BOGOF, half price and “3 for £10” type offers. If one of the products is unavailable, you’ll be stung full price for an alternative.
Here’s a “3 bottles of wine for £12” example which failed drastically for me! I chose 3 £8.99 bottles of wine in the deal (bargain), however, as one of my choices was unavailable, it was substituted for an £8.99 bottle of wine that was not in the deal (rather than another wine that was available and in the deal), so I ended up paying 3 x £8.99 = £26.97, a whopping £14.97 more than I expected.
It’s worth remembering that it’s a computer system that suggests substitutions to the picker which tend not to work very well with the deals.
Here’s a copy of my last receipt from Sainsbury’s, I managed to save a total of £35.17 on the food bill – just by checking what offers were going on at the supermarket before I visited.
Would you find deals like these at lower priced supermarkets… unlikely!

Ok, so Christmas is almost upon us (sorry that I bought up the “C” word in November), and I think we’ve got a pretty unique Christmas recipe idea!
We’ve made the ultimate Christmas Burger – basically, it’s a Christmas dinner in a bun. How this hasn’t cottoned on sooner I just don’t know, especially considering how great it tastes!
Check out our step-by-step cook-a-long podcast on how to make this beauty, and yes, it comes with all the trimmings!
Turkey Burger, Stuffing, Bacon, Cranberry sauce, Brussels sprouts (optional for obvious reasons!) and Roast potatoes.
Bring on the Christmas Party!

Well, I’ve been in Cape Town SA for 10 days now and I’m due back next week. I feel I just had to blog about some of the food I’ve been eating over here.
Trying not to rub it in, but its summer over here which means lots of food cooked outside and on the BBQ. The best meat of all is Ostrich meat. It’s a red meat that tastes simply sublime and contains very little fat. Ostrich is the new cow!
Luckily, ostrich meat is becoming more popular in the UK, you’re most likely to find it at markets (in both steak and minced form).
Fresh fruit and veg is also in ample supply, so I’ve been making plenty of fruit smoothies – perfect for balancing out the after affects of South Africa’s famous wines from the night before!
Best get back to the sun, its waiting for me!
